Abstract
The effect of chemical restraints with either 2.0mg/kg intramuscular injection of xylazine hydrochloride or 0.1mg/kg intramuscular injection of acepromazine during standard excretory urography was studied in five adult local dogs receiving 800mgI/kg intravenous injection of 76% Urograffin®. Radiographs were obtained immediately, at 10 mins, 20 mins and 40 mins post injection of Urograffin, while scores ranging from 1-4 was assigned to nephrographic densities. Also, respiratory rates (RR), heart rates (HR) and pulse rates (PR) were determined before sedation, after sedation, immediately after contrast agent administration and at 10 minutes interval during the 40 minutes duration of urography. In addition, adverse effects associated with injection of the drugs were noted as at when they occurred. In this study, sedation with xylazine was associated with few adverse effects such as transient apnoea and arrhythmia. Nephrographic opacification score was significantly (P<0.05) higher and persisted longer in the xylazine sedated dogs than acepromazine sedated dogs. Also, there was no significant difference in the HR and PR following xylazine and acepromazine sedation in the dogs. It was thus concluded that pretreatment with chemical restraint agents do affect nephrographic opacification and fading and that xylazine sedation provides better nephrographic opacification than acepromazine
