Abstract
ABSTRACT
Most Nigerian indigenous breeds of goat are raised under free range traditional system in rural communities, where their embedded genetic potentials are underexploited due to poor management practices. This study compared the productivity of phenotypically identified primigravid does belonging to three different breed types; West African Dwarf (WAD) n=17, Red Sokoto (RS) n=13 and crossbreed of WAD & RS n= 12. Synchronization was done using gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) (Receptal®) at 100µg per animal, and Prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) Dinoprost thromethamine (LutalyseR) at 5mg per animal. The animals were mated naturally, fed supplemented diet and allowed access into established paddocks for 190 days. The weight and the haematology of the does were monitored during the pregnancy. The gestation length (GL), litter size, weight of kids, weight distribution by sex and post-partum offspring weight changes and survival were evaluated. Data were tested for significant differences between groups using analysis of variance (ANOVA). P<0.05 was considered significant. The WAD does had the longest GL of (153.88±5.7) days, followed by RS (152.69±4.4) and WAD/RS (152.50±3.8). The litter weight and GL correlated inversely and significantly (p<0.05) in WAD (-0.529) but not in RS (-0.48) and WAD/RS crossbred (-0.345). There was a linear and significant increase in mean live weight, PCV, RBC and Hb values in all breeds, with increasing gestation length. The weight gain and PCV of RS does was higher than for other breeds. Mean live birth weight of kids differed significantly (p<0.001) between kids from RS and WAD, and RS and WAD/RS. Post-partum weight changes in kids showed significant increase in all breeds. Also, kid mortality was 4% and 23% in WAD and RS respectively. Conclusively, RS had better utilization of supplemented feed and pasture for maternal body and offspring development. Post-partum high kid mortality of RS kids may due to exposure of naïve kids to wet humid tropical environment under semi-intensive management.

Key words: Nigeria indigenous goats, Semi intensive management, estrus synchronization, productivity
