Classification of Resistance of Escherichia coli Isolated from Poultry with Colibacillosis to the Complement

Valiollah Naroyi, Saeed Salari.

Abstract
One of the main factor of disease causing microorganisms are their sensitivity or resistancy to the action of serum complement. Categorization of a microorganism as resistant or susceptible will lead to the better understanding of its pathogenicity. The aim of the presented study is to determine the level of complement resistance of 35 Escherichia coli isolated from poultry with colibacillosis in Iran. The results showed that 94.3% of the strains has intermediate sensitivity to complement serum. Based on literature review, our results as a first report from Iran, indicated that the resistance to complement in isolates of study area is not essential and unique to reach internal organs, and other factors, like iron uptake system, antibody escaping, resistance to antimicrobial peptides of serum, maybe, compensate the pathogenicity and, of course, factors related to the host need further analysis.

Key words: Escherichia coli, Complement, Microtitr plate technique, Serum
