Abstract
Till date, there is paucity of information on the effects of xylazine-ketamine hydrochloride (Hcl) anaesthetic protocol on pregnant West African Dwarf (WAD) doe goat. A WAD doe goat of 2 years was used for the study. The effect of this protocol on physiological, selected hematological and serum electrolytes parameters were monitored following anaesthetic induction. Anaesthetic induction was achieved with the use of xylazine and ketamine Hcl at the doses of 1mg/kg and 10mg/kg intramuscularly (i.m) respectively. Parameters assayed was done on the baseline, during the anaesthetic induction and 24 hours post induction. Physiological parameters were taken at 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270 minutes while blood for hematological and serum electrolytes analyses were determined at 60, 120, 240, and 300 minutes and 24 hours post-induction for the analysis of red blood cell count, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, white blood cell count, potassium, sodium and chloride ion. During the anaesthetic induction, there were recorded physico-hematological and serum electrolyte changes which varied from the values obtained at baseline and 24-hours post induction. However, these changes could be dose dependent of the protocol experimented, anaesthetic and/or pregnancy stress. Result obtained showed that the protocol experimented was not associated with any side effects. Observational studies revealed that the pregnant doe goat was in good health, with no discharge and successfully kidded at term without any challenges. From our study, we reported a successful use of this anaesthetic protocol on pregnant WAD doe goat.

Key words: Xylazine, Ketamine, glucose, pregnancy, West African Dwarf goat
