Abstract
Infectious bursal disease continue to be happened in Egypt causing a great economic losses in
chickens. Thirty chicken flocks showing clinical signs suspected to be due to IBDV infection
have been investigated from Behera and Alexandria governorates. Twelve flocks are confirmed
to be infected with IBDV by RT/PCR showing a band of 620 bp on agar gel using a specific
primer of VP2 gene of IBDV. Eight positive PCR samples were chosen for further
characterization by sequencing analysis. Seven isolates were characterized as vvIBDV and one
as classical IBDV. The molecular characterization of isolated IBD field strains in the present
study indicated a continuous circulation of vvIBDV although of intensive vaccination programs.
